Descripción del proyecto
The aim of this project is to provide the international community with a tool to undertake wind tunnel tests for any kind of object in a virtual environment. The virtual environment allows one to view, touch, and hear simulation results in a more friendly and adaptable system than in conventional wind tunnels.
Categoría RENATA: Entorno virtual compartido
Users of the virtual wind tunnel will be able to steer the simulation, that is to say, they will be able to visualize the partial results of the simulation and make adjustments to the model in an iterative manner.
Moreover, the distributed visualisation modules will allow several users physically located in different places, to collaborate around the result of the simulation by means of sharing views and/or pointing at points in the virtual world.
The main goal of this project is to allow the interaction of people with fluid simulations through image manipulation or through other interfaces such as haptics or sound.
These systems can be used by scientists, engineers, or students to have a better understanding of complex physical phenomena that would be very difficult to understand otherwise. It can be used for scientific museums such as “Maloka” or “Museo Interactivo de EPM” to teach the general public about physical phenomena that would be difficult to explain using traditional techniques.
Our efforts in this project will be concentrated on the real-time, realistic simulation of a virtual wind tunnel. However, it is also important for us to demonstrate how to visualise such data. We will define at least two types of clients for this information: one based on standard PCs for demonstration purposes, and one based on an immersive visualisation facility for discussion among experts.
The proposed system is centred particularly on wind tunnel or water channel simulations. However, the proposed virtual environment does not have the limitations of conventional wind tunnels.
The present project is developed in collaboration with the Applied Mechanics group at EAFIT University, the Advanced Man-Machine Interface Laboratory of the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta, Canada (AMMI Lab), the Imagine Group at Los Andes University, and the Virtual Reality Group at EAFIT University. This project makes use of the supercomputing network of Western Canada (WestGrid) and the information will be transmitted to Colombia through Canarie-Géant-Clara-Renata,. It makes intensive use of these network capabilities and develop communication and visualisation tools for the Renata users.
