Reserach Data Management Toolkit: now available

2017 LearnResearch data is the new currency of the digital age. From sonnets to statistics, and genes to geodata, the amount of material being created and stored is growing exponentially.

For research performing organisations, this deluge of data presents many challenges in areas such as policy and skills development, training, costs and governance. To help address these issues, today LEARN is publishing the final draft of its Toolkit of Best Practice for Research Data Management.

Download here

The Toolkit expands on the issues outlined in the LERU Roadmap for Research Data (2013). It is nearly 200 pages long, and includes:

23 Best-Practice Case Studies from institutions around the world, drawn from issues in the original LERU Roadmap;

8 Main Sections, on topics such as Policy and Leadership, Open Data, Advocacy and Costs;

One Model RDM Policy, produced by the University of Vienna and accompanied by guidance and an overview of 20 RDM policies across Europe;

An Executive Briefing in six languages, aimed at senior institutional decision makers.

Freely available to download, this RDM Toolkit is an invaluable resource for anyone helping their institution to better manage research data. If you would like a printed copy of the Toolkit, join us at our Final Conference on 5 May in London. All delegates will receive a copy, in addition to learning more about key research data issues from our speakers and workshops.

As the Toolkit is a deliverable for the European Commission (EC), it may be slightly revised following comments from the EC. We will publish any updated versions on the LEARN website. If you have comments on the Toolkit we’d love to hear them. Please contact us with your feedback.

A Participatory Foresight for National Research and Education Networks

2015 Logo RENATAThe aim of this paper is to show some results from a Foresight study related to future trends about advanced technology services of National Research and Education Networks (NREN). The approach of this study was conducted by using Foresight methods, which means: a planning process in order to obtain the definition of the exercise scope, the establishment of relevant aspects for asking international experts about the aim of this Foresight study. These experts are directors of several NREN around the world. The main result concludes, among other things, that more network services are being built to provide dark fibber links to users, increasing the flexibility and agility in the delivery of new and better services. It is a trend that will continue and that should be encouraged. Also, collaborations with mobile service providers should be established to offer academically innovative solutions to users. Other results show that there is a potential, which opens the participation of non-university hospitals for remote care in the health sector. This is corroborated in the expert’s opinion to qualify for being of high importance for the connectivity of hospitals and clinics. The results of this study are useful for any NREN around the world, but especially they have been used as input for the Colombian NREN.
