The 7th SEEDI Conference Digitisation of cultural and scientific heritage Ljubljana (Slovenia), 17-18 May 2012 SEEDI (South-Eastern European Digitisation Initiative) is an international effort to develop competence in digitisation, access and preservation of cultural and scientific heritage in the South-Eastern European countries.

It aims to:

- Build awareness on the need for digitisation of cultural and scientific heritage in the South-Eastern Europe,

- Mobilize the human and material resources existing in the region, Improve communication between centres having similar scientific interest and to disseminate scientific and practical information in the field,

- Facilitate the formation of projects that would include partners from the South Eastern Europe, Foster collaboration between the EU and South-Eastern Europe countries.

About the conference

The aim of the Conference is to present and exchange experiences with new information technologies, standards and other aspects of digitisation, access and preservation of cultural and scientific heritage. It will review current research, as well as the implementation issues, particularly metadata models and data-exchange standards formed through designing and managing the access to e-content.

It will discuss modalities of free and open access to digitised materials, including the questions of intellectual property and copyright protection. On the other hand, the Conference seeks to further promote the transfer of scientific knowledge into practical technological solutions and will also attract researchers from private companies dealing with digitisation to present their research and technological work.

Call for papers

Quality contributions related to all aspects of digitisation of cultural and scientific heritage are encouraged.

Papers that cover the application of information technologies in the field of digitisation are particularly welcome. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the Program Committee.

The papers should cover themes such as:

- Coordination and financing of digitisation at local, national, regional and European level;

- Legal aspects of digitisation and public access to copyrighted material, “orphan works”;

- Digital capture, processing and optical character recognition (OCR);

- Automatic identification of and permanent access to original (“digitally born”) e- content;

- Digitisation projects in different cultural institutions, case studies;

- Digitisation of 3D objects and archaeological sites;

- Methodologies of data harvesting for various social networks’ (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr etc.) and other public providers of e-content;

- End-user perspectives, meeting the expectations of the (digital) library users.

Papers’ presentations should not last more than 20 minutes. An extended abstract (approximately 700 words) of the paper should be submitted by 16 March 2012 by email to the address: Esta dirección electrónica esta protegida contra spambots. Proceedings

Book of abstracts with authors’ biographies will be published before the Conference.

An online programme and presentations will also be available after the Conference.

Selected scientific papers will be published in the international journal Review of the National Center for Digitization.
