Network Performing Arts Production Workshops

Network Performing Arts Production workshops facilitate outreach to new user communities in the arts and humanities areas, particularly by demonstrating the use of research networks in supporting real-time musical, dance and artistic performances.

Besides building a community with specific requirements in terms of bandwidth, network reliability, jitter and latency, the workshops demonstrate the use of specific audio, video and lighting techniques, tools and applications to support teaching, auditions and remote performances. Finally, the workshops provide opportunities for collaboration among institutions across NRENs, GÉANT and intercontinental research networks.

Research and education go beyond science and encompass many disciplines, including the arts and humanities, but also social sciences and cultural areas. TERENA started to address the needs of these user communities with the SERENATE study in 2002 and since 2009 has been involved in the organisation of Network Performing Arts Production workshops.

TERENA collaborates with Internet2, GARR and other European national research and education networks (NREN) in organising Network Performing Arts Production workshops at musical and artistic institutions.

Internet2 had previously been organising very successful hands-on audio/video production workshops with the New World Symphony in Miami, and GARR had also held several collaborations with the Music Conservatory Giuseppe Tartini in Trieste and had demonstrated the use of research networks in supporting musical performance on several occasions. Both organisations provide expert lecturers to assist in state-of-the-art and hands-on sections of the Network Performing Arts Production events.

Network Performing Arts Production workshops facilitate outreach to new user communities in the areas of arts and humanities. In particular, they demonstrate the use of research and education networks in supporting real-time musical, dance and artistic performances. The events aim to extend the reach of research networks to the arts and humanities, identifying and supporting these communities and providing opportunities for collaboration among institutions across NRENs, the GÉANT community and intercontinental research networks.

Past Workshops

TERENA, Internet2 and GARR jointly organised the first European Network Performing Arts Production workshop in Trieste, hosted by the Music Conservatory Giuseppe Tartini on 13-15 July 2009.

The second European workshop was held on 22-24 November 2010, in Paris, hosted by IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique Musique) in collaboration with Internet2, RENATER, and GARR and with support from the European Commission's EACEA (Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) Project Culture 2007-2013.
